Bio

I’m Dr. Patrick Harmon—a psychiatrist who works with children, adolescents, and adults. My career path has been anything but traditional, but it’s been incredibly rewarding. I’ve always been drawn to understanding people and helping them grow, and that passion has guided me through a pretty unique journey.

I started out with a Bachelor of Arts from Memphis State University in 1994. Then I followed a calling into ministry, earning my Master of Divinity from Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, and later, a Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena. While I was at Fuller, I realized I was only seeing part of the picture when it came to human development—especially in adolescents. That realization sparked my interest in medicine and ultimately led me to Harvard University for pre-medical studies, and then to the Medical University of South Carolina, where I earned my MD. I finished my training by completing General Residency and a Child and Adolescent Fellowship at Wake Forest School of Medicine.

One of the highlights of my professional career has been helping to revamp the psychiatry residency program at Wake Forest as their Residency Program Director. I was subsequently asked to take on the role of Vice Chair of the Department of Psychiatry. I’m board-certified in both general psychiatry and Child and Adolescent psychiatry. In 2022, I received the Emerging Leader Award from Atrium Health—that was truly a great honor.

Outside of work, I’m a proud dad of six—five grown daughters and one young son. I love being outside, especially hiking and mountaineering, and I’ve helped build several ropes courses for various camps over the years. I’ve also had the chance to participate in medical mission trips to Europe, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic, which have been incredibly meaningful experiences for me.

My goal is to practice a different brand of psychiatry that examines the entire person and not just their symptoms. I believe that superficial assessments and treatments will yield superficial results. At Providence Family Psychiatry we avail ourselves of various testing strategies, including genetic and hormonal testing, and seek to understand the important role that the gut biome and cellular health play in mental health pathology.

If you would like to learn more about our psychiatric philosophy, I invite you to schedule a 15- minute no cost consultation where we can discuss how to get you moving forward toward mental and emotional health.
